Surul Poli

Poli is a traditional sweet. Different versions of poli can be seen prepared across various different cuisines in India. Surul poli is one of my favorite sweet. It is prepared for festivals and special occasions. The fresh fried coconut filling with pottu kadalai or roasted grams makes it different and the poppy seeds (khus khus) gives a very distinct taste to this dish. This is a very simple recipe, You have to make puri and put the roasted powder and have to roll it with piping hot.I want all of you to try this poli at least once, because they are too good in taste. When I prepared this Surul Poli Within minutes, all were gone :)

Some Information about Khus khus & roasted gram
Khuskhus (poppy seeds) is one of the spices used in Indian cuisine. you could use it as a beauty aid and as a home-remedy for common ailments. About 30 grams of milk extracted from the poppy seeds mixed with sugar can be used for treating insomnia. A teaspoon of poppy seed oil taken every night is also very effective. Poppy seeds are used as a home remedy for dysentery. About quarter teaspoon of the powder of poppy seeds are sauted to a golden brown in honey. Taken twice a day, it gives relief from the symptoms. An external application of the poultice of the seeds provides great relief in joint pains, swellings and other painful conditions.Apply a paste of these seeds around the eyes or ears for inflammatory conditions of the eye or ear.
Roasted Gram: Split peas, or "dal," as they are called in India, belong to the lentil family. There are three kinds - the green, which very much resembles an ordinary dried pea; the yellow, and the red. In this country we only see two kinds - the green and the yellow. The red are more frequently seen in India, and have a more delicate flavor.
Lentils are rich in protein. About twenty-five per cent of their food value is protein. They are richer in protein than beans, and are more digestible. Period pains & heavy flow,During periods if u experience abdomen pain & heavy flow u can eat fried gram (Pottu kadalai). This works, i have tried it personally. To postpone periods You have to take a handful of pottu kadalai & a cup of milk to postpone it. It is said to take before 3 days... It works for me. I guess its better than the tablets... I read in mangayar malar .
Ingredients for Surul Poli:

Ingredients:
Maida-1/4 kg
Powdered sugar- 2cups
Roasted Gram-1/4 kg
Fresh grated coconut- 1 cup
Cardamom powder-1tsp
Khus Khus-50 gm
Ghee- 2 tbsp
Oil for frying
Method:
Make Powder:

Grind Roasted gram into fine powder and add sugar powder then mix well
Take a pan fry khus khus and coconut in ghee till golden brown and aroma comes.and mix this fry with grinded roasted powder.
Puri:
Mix flour with salt and oil. Add water to the flour and make a soft dough. Keep it aside for 10mts.
Make small lemon sized balls of the dough and roll them into thick round shaped. (Don't roll too thin.)
Heat oil in a heavy bottomed vessel. Once the oil is hot, slide the poori into the hot oil(Be cautious while handling the hot oil).

Using the spoon/laddle press it in the center gently along the edges. Pooris will start puff. Turn the poori other side fry till light golden brown. (Don't fry too long, it will turn dark color).
Remove it from oil and keep it on tissue paper.. Make sure the dough does’t turn out sticky. But don’t dust it with too much of flour, it spoils the oil.
Stuffing:

Fill it with the above mix, Put mixture in a poori immediately in a piping hot you have roll it. You need patience..

Place a tablespoon of stuffing the above fried mixture in one half of puri on the round, cover fully with another round (or fold in half) and roll again, carefully, as you would a stuffed cover it in puri roll it again This should take only a few seconds. so the stuffing doesn't not ooze out.

Now the Surul Poli is ready. and served as a snack. These can be stored in an airtight container for one or two days. This tastes just superb, I am sure u all will love this.

Sriharivatsan has passed me a cute Lemonade award. Thanks a lot dear. I feel happy & Honoured.I don’t want to leave any of my friends, so I am passing on this award to all my blogger friends.
